How to finish a case
Stand off-axis to kill reflection. Read material and date before the famous name. If the name is Tutankhamun and the object is a jar, the jar is still the object. Groups photograph the name. The register notices the join, the repair, the line that says New Kingdom, Thebes, gift of. Arabic and English often share a card. If a transliteration disagrees with a guidebook, the label in the house is the local authority for that week. Spellings of khalifas and neighbourhoods wander. That is Cairo, not a plot.
Do not block the case to lecture friends through a phone. The next visitor is also trying to read. This is the only moral note we repeat because it is the one that turns a museum into a corridor of backs.
When the label is stale, and when you are
Loans to Giza make captions in old books into historical objects. Ask staff. We expect to be wrong and would rather hear it by email than freeze a mask in Tahrir out of nostalgia. A label you cannot read because of glare is a lighting problem. A label you cannot read because you are two metres into a lecture is a manners problem.
Joinery, textile weave, manuscript ink: Islamic Art and Coptic rooms reward this slower shutter speed. Stone colossi reward scale first, then the cartouche if you still have attention. Match the reading style to the room. Greed for names produces photographs of captions and no memory of things.
Notes from the register
Guidebooks versus labels?
The house wins for that week. Guidebooks win for narrative. Do not fight a guard with a 2012 ISBN.
Latin transliteration?
Unstable. Use the card in front of you.
Touching?
No. Wear on wood and stone is a real curator problem.
Taking a picture of the label?
If allowed, then move. The photograph is not permission to camp.
Kids and labels?
Pick fewer cases. Read one material word aloud. Do not perform a seminar.
When English is missing?
Arabic is not a defect. Learn the number for the dynasty if you need a hook, or walk with someone who reads.
QR codes on cases?
House experiments. They fail when the connection fails. The paper card remains the object.
Why this page exists?
Because standing near wood is not the same as finishing an object.
Field ledger: a jar, a name, and a glare
A case with a famous royal name and a modest object. The group photographed the name. Off-axis, the card gave material, date, and a join. That is the visit. Another case, English and Arabic disagreeing with a guidebook spelling: we took the card. Another, glare: we moved our feet rather than the crowd. A visitor lecturing through a phone blocked the only readable angle; we waited. The moral note is not piety. It is how a museum stays a machine for words next to things instead of a corridor of backs.
Loans make old books historical. Ask staff. Mail us if this site is still pointing at a case that has moved. We would rather be a stale label that admits it than a frozen mask in HTML.
